You reign. You are sovereign over us, over all the earth, over the times and places of all people, and sovereign over elections.
The Psalmist thundered: “The LORD has established His throne in the heavens; and His sovereignty rules over all” (Psalm 103:19).
Though we cast votes, Your purposes aren’t thwarted by votes. The lot is cast but You determine the results to accomplish Your will (Proverbs 16:33). We tremble at this mystery. We bow before You. You are GOD. All glory and praise to You.
Almighty God, this election more than ever carries great division, anger, anxiety, and fear. Lord Jesus, we savor Your words: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (John 14:27). “I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Help our unbelief.
Almighty God, we pray for a fair election. A lawful election. A safe election.
We pray for an election where the results are immediately known; and where the final tally of votes is clear, to help spare our country from further division, tumult, and unrest.
We pray against mob reactions of violence and destruction from any political side upon the voting results.
Whatever the election outcome means for any of us, may we Your church, Your people, lead the way in our response—as resident-foreigners whose hope is heaven, whose home is your kingdom, and whose unity is in the gospel and love for each other (1 Peter 2:11; Hebrews 11:13-16; John 17:20-23; John 13:35).
By Your Holy Spirit, enable us to transcend politics and election results to “Honor all people, love the community of believers, fear God, [and] honor the king” (1 Peter 2:17).
May we respond to any election outcome with peace and confidence in Your glorious promise that: “[You] will work all things together for the good of those who love [You], and are called according to your purpose” (Romans 8:28).
Almighty God, whoever the president-elect will be, give us grace and strength to humble ourselves, for you command: “Everyone must submit to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those that exist are instituted by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted…” (Romans 13:1-2a). We know that in honoring the president-elect we honor You.
May we with bowed heads go forth in our lives to heed Your word “—that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness” (1 Timothy 2:1-4)
Almighty God, whatever the election results, may we not grow weary in doing good. May we remain unswerving in Your mission to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with You. May we remain unwavering in Your commission to bring people to saving faith in You and to a transformed life by You (Micah 6:8; Matt 28:16-20).
Almighty God, may we, Your people, with burdened hearts and bent knees, never rest from leading the way in our nation to “humble [ourselves] and pray and seek [your] face and turn from [our] wicked ways, then [You] will hear from heaven, and… will forgive [our] sin and will heal [our] land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).
In Jesus Name.
