Mark Twain once wrote, “Man is the only animal who blushes. Or needs to.”
Man is also the only animal who has a conscience.
Betray your conscience, experience the blush.
Or will you?
Regarding the behavior of the Jewish people of his day, the prophet Jeremiah declared, “Are they ashamed of their disgusting actions? Not at all—they don’t even know how to blush!” (Jeremiah 6:15).
Your conscience is the “Hazardous Area” sign to keep you careful with your life.
Your conscience is the check-engine light that something is amiss in your life.
Your conscience is the guardrail that guides and protects you from wrecking your life.
Are you paying attention?
Are you obeying?
Are you changing?
Are you blushing?
Why should you heed your conscience?
* Your conscience is the whisper of God to your soul.
God is more for your joy than you are. He’s more for your freedom than you are.
As one author put it, God isn’t a killjoy, He’s just against what kills your joy.
And against what robs your peace.
And against what ruins your life.
His whisper woos and warns before you make your choice.
His whisper brings a peace or a blush after your choice.
Unless you’ve lost your blush.
* Silencing or ignoring your conscience hardens it.
You no longer feel the promptings.
You no longer see the damage.
You no longer sense the danger.
You’ve lost your blush.
And potentially more.
* Having a clear conscience brings peace and joy.
Go against your conscience and you’ll experience the blush of guilt and grief.
Or will you?
If your conscience says, “Better not…”, and you do so anyway, regret and misery are sure to follow.
Or will they?
Only if you haven’t lost your blush.
The wisdom writer says, “Blessed are those who have a tender conscience, but the stubborn are headed for serious trouble” (Proverbs 28:4).
Blessed are those who blush…
Where have you lost your blush?
