Tattoos & the Boredom of Jesus

Do you ever get bored with Jesus? Do you slip into the place where church is boring, reading Scripture is boring, praying is boring… Jesus is boring?

Here’s a better question: Is Jesus bored with you?

Sometimes I feel that radical Christianity has become mostly about getting Christian tattoos, not cursing, handing out bottled water while saying “Jesus loves you” at red lights, and “bold” t-shirts like, “God doesn’t believe in atheists.” I don’t particularly have a problem with these (okay, maybe the t-shirt), but Jesus never emphasized special Christian markings, outings, and clothing. As a matter of fact, in John 13, Jesus said “By this the world will know that you are my disciples in that you love one another.” They’ll know we’re disciples by our love, not by our tattoos and t-shirts.

Jesus called for a way of life… Deny self, carry cross, follow HIm. Obey. Share the gospel. Love each other. Love the unloved, unlovable, and unlovely through word and deed.

I’m in this with you. Is Jesus bored with me? I’ve been asking this question to myself while leaning into 2010. Is Jesus bored with me because I’m not living radically for Him, trusting Him, depending on Him, obeying Him, serving Him by serving others, even if it costs me?

Is Jesus bored with us?

Bored with little old me? I don’t think so, Pastor Jarrod. Why, I am keeping the Holy Spirit so busy following me around making sure I don’t mess things up too bad, I think Jesus is smiling as He is watching all of us, especially watching me - it must be like reading the Sunday comics! I don’t think He is bored with me and trust me, He is certainly not bored watching you show us how to “Get Dusty”. Oh, and the t-shirt? I donated it to the shelter - it never caused one single person to ask me more about Him. I thought maybe someone else would have luck wearing it. Lots of love, Shelly :)

Every week I am encouraged by the sermons that you preach and the things that God reveals about himself through your words. I had been struggling to find a pastor preach christ and relationship instead of religion for awhile now… nervous about putting my 4 year old child in a sunday school where she’ll learn about hell fire and brimstone. I love that what i’m reading always seems to line up with your sermons and even now, what i stumble accross in your blog. I was reading the Shack when you were talking about forgiveness. And now Mere Discipleship and A New Kind of Christianity as i read words about living radically and loving completely. I love how consistent God is when you’re looking for Him. Thank you for the hard work you do in ministry and for being available for him to use you.
