Exciting times here at Grace in Washingtonville, NY. I’m preaching a series called “Get Dusty: Getting Covered in the Practical Ways of Jesus.” I guess you might have noticed the pic above. Jillian and Joe (husband and wife) are members who serve on ministry teams at our Church. They designed and created the picture, and that’s Joe who modeled for it. We have some incredibly talented people here at Grace.
After announcing the coming series, we passed out cards, and provided powdered doughnuts in our Grace Cafe’ area to stir excitement about the series. It was our quirky way (but Creative Team’s brilliant way) of introducing the series based off the Rabbinical saying, “May you be covered in the dust of your Rabbi’s feet and drink of his words thirstily.” In other words, follow Jesus so closely that the dust from His feet swirls up and covers you. The sermon is about living life like Jesus lived and doing life as Jesus said.
I banked the sermon of Martha’s busyness and Mary sitting at the feet of Jesus (Luke 10:38-42). The problem was that Martha was around Jesus, but not with Jesus. Just like us often. We can be around Jesus at Churches, Bible studies, books and podcasts, but never alone with just Jesus and His Word.
How are you doing with that? Are you spending time only around Jesus? Or are you spending time alone with Jesus, seeing how He lived life, and obeying what He said?
The call to our people was to:
1) Be Real: Where do you most need to grow?
2) Drink up: Get into God’s Word
3) Get Dusty: Surrender and obey.
Will you get dusty?

Sunday’s sermon definitely hit home. I liked how you contrasted the concept of “being in awe” of Jesus vs. seeking a Relationship with Him. Humbling and amazing that that closeness is not only available, but desired by God for everyone to strive for. He wants to be close to me? And I’m worried about getting a little dusty? Time to dive in!
Hey Joe,
Thanks for your comment, bro. Actually, you might have misheard me. I didn’t contrast our awe with Jesus vs. relationship with Jesus. My point was for us to gauge whether we’re more “admirers” of Jesus, but not “followers” Jesus. And it is awesome that God drew near to us in Christ revealing He desires relationship and intimacy with us. Thanks again, my friend. Let’s get dusty!
